The Illusion is a painting that attempts to convey that in the act of creation an artist can twist reality any way they like and still produce the illusion of the truth. If one looks carefully, one realises that every animal in this painting is a lie.
In this painting, the artist wanted to convey that each and every person she met had their own reality, especially in the political environment she was living in at the time of making this painting. Sterre was very sure of her truth, but the rest of the world had many opinions about her which were not even remotely correct. Her life was more like a story of fiction that played itself out from day to day through the eyes of others.
