Masquerade – Woman with Fan, 1995-1996

oil on canvas

The woman in the painting looks through a window holding a fan in front of her mouth indicating that what she wants to say is a secret, or maybe it’s a lie!

The eyes of the lady look at the viewer with a direct gaze, like she’s about to tell the truth, but for some reason she wants to hide it behind the fan.

The treatment is very simple because the message has to remain very clear with no distractions. It is almost as if the figure is actually just a statue in an alcove, the viewer can make the choice of what is real, what is a lie, or maybe it is the truth!
