The Spirit, 2015

I have found mesh fabric to be a very inspiring material and wanted to make an artwork using the visual and conceptual meaning of the linkages seen in netting. I then thought of painting a spirit/soul. The two ideas then gelled together into this artwork.

This painting was quite hard to make because I did not use any mathematical calculations to determine how to wrap the mesh around an invisible body. The white lines representing the mesh were painted free hand using my artistic judgment for distance and direction.

This artwork also has a conceptual link to the making of mummies. The painting shows an invisible spirit that rises up into an invisible body. This soul/spirit looks up while the head is barely visible. A life rises to join the positive energies of the universe. This indicates that the spirit joins nature without any forethought, it follows nature’s will and rises to join creation.

She’s a Leopard Too: Tapestry

My mother, who is a tapestry weaver, really liked this painting. She made a beautiful tapestry based on it that is just the same size as the original. It is included here.
