The Blessing, 2005

Oil on Masonite board, 91.44cm X 91.44cm, retouched in 2020 with acrylic, gifted to Gita Narayan

The vibrant decorated truck art that I saw on a visit to the South Indian state of Kerala inspired me to make this painting. I loved the way everything that was painted on the trucks was so psychedelic. This stimulated me to make several paintings.  One of these paintings is “The Blessing”.

I made this particular painting before I started using acrylic regularly. However, there are four elements that can already be found in this painting that I later used in almost all my paintings. These elements are, very bright colours and use of shadow to show depth. I also amplified the use of perspective as a tool to emphasise specific parts my work. In the case of this painting, I played with perspective by increasing the size of the elements starting from the hand in the middle.

She’s a Leopard Too: Tapestry

My mother, who is a tapestry weaver, really liked this painting. She made a beautiful tapestry based on it that is just the same size as the original. It is included here.
