This screen was part of the exhibition “Impressions” held in the Habitat Centre Art Gallery in New Delhi
This panel was made after I completed the collection of paintings called “The Masquerade”. I was still inspired by the idea that it is difficult to navigate all the unexpected twists and turns that life brings. I used this idea as an excuse to play some more with unexpected perspective and viewpoints.
As one stands in front of the screen, it feels as if you are about to embark on a journey. A symbolic stair climbing journey. As you climb you find very unexpected walls blocking the way or you stand clueless before a sheer drop into nowhere.
Not only is the maze difficult to navigate, the painted building is floating in outer space. The only ground is the actual floor on which the screen and the viewer actually stand.
The screen represents the thoughts in our heads where so many things seem threatening and fill us with fear for the future. The reality is that we are standing on a solid real floor as we are watching the maze of a mind that creates confusion on a painted screen.
As an artist I want to communicate through my paintings with the viewers without using words but instead use my experiences, thoughts and feelings. I paint realistic images each of which communicates a feeling and thought independently, as well as all together. Just as words make a sentence.
My mother, who is a tapestry weaver, really liked this painting. She made a beautiful tapestry based on it that is just the same size as the original. It is included here.
